WINTER SENIOR NIGHT.

Senior Night Ideas4 min read

By John Birch, designer and founder

Most senior night planning happens in the fall, around football, soccer and volleyball. Three sports hold their night in winter instead: basketball, wrestling and hockey. All three fall right after the holidays, so the planning has to come first. Here is what each night looks like, the photo trap in each sport, and when to order. The whole senior edition is on the senior night page, and the photo guide shows which photos to send first.

THREE NIGHTS AFTER THE HOLIDAYS.

  • Basketball. The last home game of the regular season, usually in late January or February.
  • Wrestling. The last home dual of the season, usually in January or early February.
  • Ice hockey. The last home game of the regular season, usually in January or February.

Between now and any of those nights sit the holidays: school breaks, travel, tournaments and family visits. None of that stops a senior night from arriving on schedule, so everything that can be done early is worth doing early.

WHY THE PRINTED SET COMES FIRST.

Senior night has a date, so we plan backwards from it. These are our senior night clocks:

Senior night clocks

Files 1 week before · Printed sets 2 weeks

Count back from a night in late January and the printed-set mark lands soon after the break, when school, practice and travel all restart at once. So for a winter night, the printed set is best ordered before the break rather than after it. The free proof comes first and takes 1–2 business days, and one revision is included, so ask for it a few days ahead of that mark. Ordering for a senior night date? Tell us the date — we schedule proofs against real deadlines.

The calculator on the senior night page takes your date and shows what is still in time. If a printed set can no longer make it, the digital files still can: gift the digital first, print the gift note, and the printed set follows after the night.

WHAT EACH NIGHT LOOKS LIKE.

  • Basketball. Each senior is called to center court with their parents before tip-off while the name, the number and the plans after graduation are read. More on senior night basketball.
  • Wrestling. Each senior walks to the center of the mat with their parents while the name, the weight class and the career record are read. More on wrestling senior night.
  • Ice hockey. Each senior skates to center ice with their parents while the name, the number and the position are read over the rink. More on hockey senior night.

The walk itself is photographed on the night, after the card is made. That photo belongs on a poster later, not on the card, so the card is built from the season you already have on your phone.

THE PHOTO TRAP IN EACH SPORT.

  • Basketball. Gym light hides the face: one crisp close-up taken somewhere bright, plus the game photos.
  • Wrestling. Headgear off for the close-up; a stance or a hand raise for the action shot, never a mid-pin photo of two bodies.
  • Ice hockey. The helmet and cage hide the face: one close-up with the helmet off, in the locker room or at home.

The rest of the list is the same in every sport:

  • One with the head turned left, one turned right.
  • One full-body — head to shoes.
  • One in the team kit — game day or team photo day.

WHAT THE SENIOR EDITION CARRIES.

Every senior card carries the four-year line FR · SO · JR · SR, the senior quote and the athlete signature line, with SENIOR EDITION · 1 OF 1 beside the registered card ID. The rest of the back belongs to the sport, with up to three stat chips of your choosing:

  • Basketball. Position and number, career highs as stat chips (points, assists, rebounds).
  • Wrestling. Weight class, record and pins as stat chips. The singlet carries no number, so the back of the kit stays plain.
  • Ice hockey. Position and number, career highs as stat chips (goals, assists, save percentage).

The same artwork comes as a poster for the wall and a banner for the gym, built from the same photos and shown on the same free proof. A printed banner keeps its own clock (ships separately, 1–2 weeks), so ask for it with the first proof.

THE WHOLE SENIOR CLASS.

Ordering for every senior on the team? A whole class can. One email with the sport, the roster size and the date sets it up; each family then sends its own photos and signs off its own proof, and every card is built separately. Write to hello@gamedayedition.com.
